Garden Studio

Starting in 2022, Sprig was appointed by Lineworks to develop designs for a free-standing extension to a residential property. The brief was for a flexible space that can functioning as a work from home office space and a guest outhouse.

Originally intended as a permitted development project, the increased ambition of the client to facilitate multiple uses made a planning application necessary. This was granted in 2023.

The design is inspired by the rural residential shed but with Linework’s signature approach to ‘reimagining dwellings’ by integrating modern features such as the glazed pocket door.

Natural materials and low-carbon screw piles were key design drivers. Sprig supported the spatial design and developed the technical documentation that allowed the vision for an almost steel-free timber framed structure with accoya timber cladding and a lightweight tin roof. The interiors feature bespoke joinery and a cork floor.

The Larimar Retreat & Nebulosa Restaurant

Cunae is an eco-tourism resort located in San Francisco de Macorís, in the North of The Dominican Republic that aims to provide an sustainable & culturally sensitive destination.

The inspiration for the design was the culture of craft and the desire that processes should be analogue. The two building are united by an outdoor kitchen that becomes a performance space to demonstrate the analogue culinary techniques. The two buildings use natural materials like timber, earth and stone. The freeform roof represents a celebration of life and nature. The roof was optimised so that it could be built out of straight members with traditional joining techniques.

Sprigs design is now being detailed by a local team. Works on the wider site have already begun so we hope to see the first building in late 2026.

Urban Roots Bench

Sited in one of London’s many fast growing residential areas, Urban Roots Bench acts as a place-making tool for communities to build local identity where historic identity is not well established.

Urban Roots Bench was designed alongside the design of a public engagement workshop. Using parametric design tools , workshop participants are able to manipulate a digital version of the bench, changing properties like curvature, frequency and colour. Participants gain insight into the use of computational design in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry that is shaping their neibourhoods and also gain attachment to the physical Urban Roots Bench in thier public space through gained knowledge of the process.

The project wasn’t selected for the London Festival of Architecture programme however, as the project is the design of an engagement project and artwork we are actively looking for funding and participation oppertunities.

Location: London Royal Docks
Role: Lead Designer, Consultation Designer
Status: Awaiting funding oppertunities

Split Space – Rear House Extension, Walthamstow

Sprig was approached by a creative domestic client in early 2025 to extend their terraced house in Walthamstow. Sprig advised the client on how to keep the scheme within the scale of a permitted development & on how to initiate party wall processes with the neighbouring property.

The brief was not to gain the maximum footprint internal but to create a better relationship between the Kitchen / Dining space and the garden.

The design prioritises both the internal and external space by splitting the front part of the garden in two. Half becomes a pitched kitchen extension with contemporary brick facades. The other half is an intimate external space covered by a pitched pergola. The two spaces unite into a symmetrical form.
The internal space is enhanced by a generous apex corner window which links both the dining and kitchen space to the garden.
